Industry Night

Written By: Dr. David Keffer and Ella Dubendorfer

In collaboration with the local student chapter of Materials Advantage, the MSE department, through MSE for Me and MSE CaReS, hosted “Industry Night” with a panel of five recent UTK MSE alumni who are working in industry across the country. This panel was inspired by requests from MSE students to learn what are important things to do to prepare for a successful industrial job search.  The panel made suggestions for students at all points in the curriculum, including freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  This was a unique opportunity for students to ask their questions to former UTK MSE students who are now working in industry. These alumni took turns answering each question such as how they were successful in finding and securing industrial internships and jobs, as well as sharing some of their secret “go-to moves” for successful interviews.

The three pillars of the MSE mentoring programs, MSE for Me (freshmen) and MSE CaReS (sophomores, juniors and seniors) are (i) social support, (ii) academic support and (iii) nutritional support. All three elements were present at the Industry Night Panel, where we began with a taco bar, moved to a community conversation with the panel and ended with a short reflective discussion with faculty mentors.
