MSE Graduate Students Win TMS Best Paper Contest

Di Xie, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Tennessee, won 1st place award at the “2022 TMS Best Paper Contest – Graduate Division”. The title of the paper is “Plastic anisotropy and twin distributions near the fatigue crack tip of textured Mg alloys from in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements and multiscale mechanics modeling”. The award will be presented at the 150th TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition to be held in Anaheim, CA, February 27 – March 3, 2022. Di Xie’s Ph.D. dissertation advisor is Prof. Yanfei Gao, and her co-advisor is Prof. Peter K. Liaw. Her research is supported by the NSF program.

 

Rakesh R. Kamath, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Tennessee, won 2nd place award at the “2022 TMS Best Paper Contest – Graduate Division”. The title of the paper is “In-situ, dynamic synchrotron x-ray radiography studies on melt pool evolution and solidification kinetics during laser fusion processing of Ti-6Al-4V”. The award will be presented at the 150th TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition to be held in Anaheim, CA, February 27 – March 3, 2022. Rakesh’s Ph.D. dissertation advisor is Prof. Hahn Choo. His research is supported by the ONR-MURI program (UTK PIs: Prof. Suresh Babu and Prof. Hahn Choo).

 

TMS Best Paper Contest (Graduate Division) is an annual international competition for graduate students in Materials Science and Engineering. This award was established by the TMS (The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society) in 1994. It represents a high level of distinction and outstanding achievement in the student’s graduate dissertation work. It is awarded only to two graduate students each year.
