Material Advantage is a student organization that combines several other organizations, such as:
- The American Ceramic Society (ACerS)
- Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST)
- ASM International
- The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS)

The Materials Research Society was founded on January 14, 2011. It’s stated mission is to enhance the academic, professional, civic and social life of the graduate students in the Materials Science & Engineering department at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Undergraduate students are invited to join, especially those who are seeking mentorship and those who are planning to attend graduate school in the future.
