Jakob Scroggins Receives ASM Acta Materialia Inc. Scholarship

The ASM Materials Education Foundation awarded UTK MSE student Jakob Scroggins its Acta Materialia Inc. Undergraduate Scholarship. ASM awards two scholarships to undergrad students majoring in metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, or to students with a significant interest in the materials area. The scholarship presentation will be at the ASM Leadership Luncheon in October at the ASM’s 110th Annual Society Meeting in Detroit, Michigan. The award includes a financial scholarship and travel support.

Jakob Scroggins is a junior at the University of Tennessee where he majors in materials science and engineering and works as an undergraduate research assistant in Prof. David Harper’s laboratory at the Center for Renewable Carbon. Jakob’s research project involves characterizing lignin-derived, nanostructured carbon materials for energy storage and conversion. Jakob is already a co-author on a paper investigating lignin-based activated carbons for environmental remediation. In the summer of 2023, he completed an internship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he worked on lithium-ion-battery recycling in the group of Dr. Yaocai Bai. Broadly, he is interested in sustainable materials and energy storage.

Congratulations Jakob!
