TMS has a mission to promote the global science and engineering professions concerned with minerals, metals, and materials. TMS works with those in industry, academia, and government positions on a worldwide scale. Its vision is to be the professional society of choice when it comes to minerals, metals, and materials.

The society creates various opportunities through administering awards, hosting international conferences, publishing books and journals, conducting courses and training, and bringing together the professional community to address issues of common concern. It also provides leadership in the accreditation of materials and metallurgical engineering university programs.

TMS holds an Annual Meeting & Exhibition that brings together engineers and scientists from all over the world. For more than 150 years, TMS has been connecting professionals to collaborate, share research, and build networks in the minerals, metals, and materials fields.

The Annual Meeting consists of more than 70 symposia that span the breadth of materials science and engineering. The event includes a full exhibit, invited keynote sessions, networking and social events, poster sessions, awards ceremonies, and more.

The 2024 TMS Annual Meeting took place on March 3-7 in Orlando, Florida. The team of junior Jakob Scroggins, sophomore Megan Gillespie, junior Fabriana Prawiranata, and master’s student Raymond Wysmierski came in third place out of 17 teams in the Materials Bowl science trivia challenge.

Jakob Scroggins’ poses next his award-winning poster at the Functional Materials Division Undergraduate Poster Competition.

Jakob Scroggins’ poster was awarded first place in the Functional Materials Division Undergraduate Poster Competition. His work involves converting lignin, a renewable feedstock, into a nanostructured carbon electrode used for energy storage in supercapacitors.
