MSE senior, Bethany Claes, spent the summer participating in an industrial internship at ORTEC/Ametek in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. She worked as a Materials Science and Engineering Research & Development intern with mentor Bradley Allen, Division Vice President of Engineering, Advanced Measurement Technology. Bethany worked on several projects over the summer, including an effort to reimagine the company’s refinement process to match current standards and improve their sustainability. She performed high-purity germanium detector processing for the COmpton Spectrometer & Imager (COSI) project. (Ge detectors are used to identify x-ray and gamma ray radiation.) Of her experience, Bethany says, “It was interesting to see the large variety of projects that a materials scientist can contribute to in industry.”
Congratulations, Bethany!
